Online Poker Rooms Donate to Haiti Disaster Fund

Following the news that there had been a devastating earthquake in Haiti that registered a huge 7.0 on the magnitude readings, the online poker world has sprung into action in order to help to raise funds to send to the citizens that are truly in need.

Last week saw the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) issue a statement to the press revealing that the online poker community had donated over $1.5 million to the disaster fund that will be used to help citizens get food, medical help and aid their reconstruction.

The earthquake rendered a large number of citizens homeless, destroying home and shelters that they were using as a home but that wasn’t the worst that the natural disaster has to offer, taking a large number of casualties.

Following the conclusion of January, the figure that is believed to have been donated to the fund is expected to have exceeded that figure easily, with Pokerstars alone offering a $1,492,780.52 donations alone, made up of half contributions from their huge player base and the other half put up by the site themselves.

Not to be out done by their rivals, Full Tilt Poker also stepped up to the mark providing its members with an account that players can make a donation to in order to add to the fund. The site has recorded a total of 23,161 donations from its members, totaling $329,736.64 to which they have committed to match, so sending a total of $659,473.28.

Cake Poker were the first online poker room to announce that they were going to offer a form of donation to the fund, although their donation was dwarfed by that of Pokerstars, offering $32,000 to the relief account.

Other online poker rooms such as Bodog.com are trying to make their presence known too, founder Calvin Ayre has challenged players to open their wallets in support for the relief, so far collecting $247,911 which Ayre has promised to match up to $1,000,000 through his foundation as long as players are willing to offer their support.

Its great to see that poker rooms are looking to fight their way back into the press for the right reasons rather than that of scandal and deception.
