freeroll challenge the beginning – guidelines

Inspired by the chris ferguson challenge where he went from 0$ to 10.000$ I will try to accomplice this myself.

Guidelines of the challenge are:

• Never buy into a cash game or a Sit & Go with more than 5 percent of the total bankroll (there is an exception for the lowest limits: it is allowed to buy into any game with a buy-in of $2.50 or less).

• Dont buy into a multi-table tournament for more than 2 percent of the total bankroll, but its allowed to buy into any multi-table tournament that costs $1.

• If at any time during a No-Limit or Pot-Limit cash-game session the money on the table represents more than 10 percent of the total bankroll, you must leave the game when the blinds reach you.

Since im not sponsored by full tilt poker, i have no restrictions and will play in different freeroll tournaments on different pokersites.

I will post review of the tournaments and games that i play, on a daily basic.

the freeroll challenge – day 1

I have never really played freeroll tournaments.
When i started playing poker 8 years ago, i started with real money
and the only freerolls i have played have been private events,
first deposit welcome freerolls and freerolls from loyaly reward
programs.
I though it was going to be easy to find a freeroll because of
the freeroll scheme i have added in the forum,
but i quickly found out that it is not up to date at all,
so i will get a new one up and running and get all the sites updated
very soon.

I found a 250$ freeroll at mansion poker with 1075 players entered.
As i had expected it was redicilous action packed with players
moving all in all the time. After 15 min i look a my first desent
hand, pocket 10´s. The pot has been raised to 100 with 1 caller
and i make it 400. The raiser moves the rest of hes chips,
a few hundred and and the 2nd caller, calls that. Hes sitting with 5000
 and i have 900 left that i go all in with. Unfortunately
one shows q-q  and the other shows j-j and a jack on the flop seals
the deal, but not in my favor and im out.

Since its my first day of playing i decide to give some more freerolls
a go while playing some low limit cash at pkr, so i sign
up for the 100$ freeroll at partypoker with 6203
players in it. i look at a few other sites and find that pokerroyal
has a 200$ freeroll with maximum 1600 players and register for
that one too and 1473 register for that one. The one at party poker
is a fixed limit tournament.
In the party poker tour i finished 2019 when i had 9-9 and the flop
comes 10-j-q and on the turn comes a king giving me the straight.
Im all in at this point and loose to the top straight.
On pokerroyal i had build an ok stack but loose half on a coinflip
with q-a against 9-9. A few hands later I pick up 8-8 under the gun.
The blinds are 300-150 and i have 2000 left so i push it all in and
get called by a-k, unfortunately a king comes on the turn and im gone.

Last shot today is also at party poker in the 150$ nordic freeroll with
849 players. Its a speed tournament and when i look at a-k under
the gun with blinds 200-100 i call it possitive that someone will raise.
Well the next player raises to 800,then a call and then an all in and
as its getting late i take my chance and gamble on this hand and call.
The 2 other playes also calls and the hands are 6-q, 9-9 and 10-10
so not the worst spot to be in. I hit nada and the q-6 wins with 2 pair.

4 tournaments and not in the money in anyone of them. Not the best
start but hopefully i will do better tomorrow.

 

the freeroll challenge day 2

My son woke 5.30 today with a nasty stomic ache, so we had an early start as usual.
Normal we take turns getting up with him early, but we both got up today.
He setteled down after 30min so I started looking for an early freeroll and
found an interesting one on absolute poker. It was free to enter, but with 0.50
rebuys and add on and 50$ added to the prize pool, with 4340 players and 5min blinds.
With 1200 chips out of 1500 starting chips i look at 5-5 in early possition with
one caller, and i also call. Now i player moves all in with 300 and the next
player moves in with 470 aand i call the remaining 370. One shows a2 and the other
showns a-8, so the the worst situation. Flop is good, turn is good, but the
river brings an ace. The blinds now go up again 150-75 and after that im down to around
500 when i get a-k. 1 player has called and i push all in, and to more calls +
the limber. Flop comes 3-6-a and 1 goes all in pushing the 2 others out.
When he shows k-k its all good, and i take down 2000. Blinds now go up to 200-100 with
20 ante and after 2 rounds im down to 1400 when i get a-10 on the button. Its
folded around to me and i push, and the big blind sitting with 10k instantly calls and shows 7-j,
and my high card wins and im up to 3100.Blinds now get raised to 300-150 so i will
soon need to double up again. I dont get anything the next 10 min and we go on
break. I have 2800 left and blinds start at 500-250, so im running out of time.
Average stack is now 12.000. With 7-8 suited in middle pos i take a shot at the 1200 pot
I get called by a-k and 6-7 and dont hit anything so thats it, and in out finishing
nr 550. I like this freeroll though, and will play this again for sure.
 
In the afternoon i played this cHp feature freeroll at hollywood poker that i dident know what was about
exept that 20 moved on to another tournament. I registered anyway though since
it was about to start. It was abit of chaos this afternoon with my son going crazy
with ear pains, idident get to concentrate on the tour. All i can say is that i finished
 in 96th place.

Started today at absolute poker which is the site i think have the best freerollsright now. It was the 50$ added with 0.50 rebuys and add on, and the game ispl omaha with 1664 players. I get a good start and triple my stack when i hita straight on the flop. I sit tight for a while and my stack decreases to 3500

but hitting a straight again brings me up to 5000. As we go on break there are

145 players left and average stack is 17600 and i have 7000. Blinds are now 500-250

and i pick up a-a-6-8. There is one limber and i raise pot in bb and get 2 calls.

Flop comes 3-6-q, i bet pot and take it down there. 2 hands after i get k-k-2-5

and with 2 limbers i bet pot again and get 2 calls. Flop now comes a-4-5 and being

in late possition i can check when both players have checked. A queen comes on

the turn and they check again and so do i. Flop now brings a king and im happy

to win the pot. I now have 15.000, and with 63 players getting paid i can taste

my first freeroll payout. Im sitting tight for awhile untill we reach the money,

and i have 17.000 left when that happens. Very nice, im now in the money, and

ready to go all the way. I pick up q-q-10-k on the button and with 6 players in

the pot i call. Flop comes q-8-7 and i bet half the pot. 2 players call and

a 4 comes. They check again, and i go all in and they both calls. The river

is a 7 giving me the nuts house and i win the 47.000 pot, very nice now im just

above average and there are 55 players left. A few hands later with blinds being

2000-1000 utg raises the pot and i have a-a-2-7 so i reraise the pot. He moves

all in, and have a little less chips than me. He shows k-k and i dont remember

the 2 others, but my aces hold up and i take down the 97.000 pot. At this this

point im in 7th possition, and 47 players are left. With blinds being 5000-2500

i get q-q-k-7 double suit and call in middle possition. A short stack raises all

in and i have to call 15.000 more and the pot is 20.000. I call and he shows

a-k-x-x and hits the ace, so i go down to 50k. Blinds go up again to 6000-3000

leaving me with 41k after the blinds and im looking to double up soon. Its time

for a break again and we are 26 players left and blinds are 8000-4000. As i post

the bb im looking at a-a-9-2 and 4 players limp. I push the rest of my stack and

only get one caller, so its just perfect. My aces hold up and i win the 107.000

pot, what a nice spot to pick up aces. After a while and some smaller pot we hit

the final table and i got 114.000 in chips, so im in 6th possition. First hand

i pick up a-j-5-4 double suit and raise the pot, blinds are 24.000-12.000.

I get called by k-k-x-x but hit the ace and take down the pot and increase my

stack to 221.000.

At the final table things go quickly so for the rest of the story i will post

the hand histories. I finish in 3rd place and win 6.55$. Im really satisfiedthat i have gone from 0$ to 6.55$ in 3 days and that i now can start playingreal money tournaments to increase my bankroll.

the freeroll challenge – in the money again

June 18, 2008

After the victory earlier today i have now started playing at the micro
limit games and played some fixed limit 0.02-0.04 and 0.05-0.10.
There is a 1$ tournament at pokerstars tomorrow with 2100$ added i
really would like to play, but to trade my $ and make a player to
player transfer I need 11$ at absolute poker because there is a rule
that there must be atleast 10$ left in your account after making a
transfer.

The freerolls im playing tonight are 250$ on mansion poker. 200$
freeroll at pokerroyal and a nordic 2500$ freeroll at pokerstars.
In the mansion tour i lost with aa all in preflop.
On pokerroyal i finished 197 out of 1430. 150 got paid so pretty
close to the money, but not good enough.
I boost my bankroll a little on absolute and go from 6.68$ to
7.54$

On pokerstars things went smooth from the beginning. Started with
q-q on first hand and got all in preflop against a-k which i won.
After that i dident win any major pots, but took down alot of
small ones and got up to 8600 just after the break when i won
a huge hand with q-q and got up to 20.000 (see hand history below)
After than I sit very tight for the next hour and as we go on the
next break im in the money and have 13.500 chips left. 247 players
are still in and average stack is 39.000. Blind are now               2000-1000         2000-1000
Getting real low stack now and end up pushing with 10-q. I get the
perfect call by 9-10, but he pulls a 9 on the flop and thats it for me.
I finsh as number 190 out of 6596 and win 3$ so im very happy about being
abel to play the 1$ 2100$ added tourney tomorrow.

the freeroll challenge – day 5

June 19, 2008

Im ready for the 1$ tournament at pokerstars with 2100$ added.

1570 players were in, and the prizepool was $3513 with 255 players getting paid, starting chips 1500 and 10min blinds.
I expected to see alot of action in this low buyin tournament, and i dident get dissapointed.
So my strategy was simple, keep it tight and aggressive.
I dont last long though (see hand history below)

the freeroll challenge day 6

Played the daily $2500  nordic freeroll at pokerstars, but got beaten with a-k agains a-10 early in the tour, and that was it.

I then played some 0.05-0.10 fixed limit at absolute poker. Won a little and increased my bankroll to $8.41. I then saw there was a $1 rebuy tournament with $1500 guranteed that was about to start. Now i can only play maximum $1 tournaments, so i couldent rebuy but decided to give it a shot.

402 players are in, so there might be a little overlay.

First interesting hand is played after 15min when i picket up the pocket rockets. A player decides to raise to 390 when the blinds are 30-15. Offcourse he will then also be prepared to call an allin, so i push my stack. He shows q-10s and the best hand wins.

I sit tight the next 30min untill i pick up k-k in middle possition with blinds80-40. I raise it to 240 and get one caller. q-8-4 and i bet out 400. Player x calls and the turn is a 7. I now bet 1120 of my remaining 2000 and he moves all in. I call and he shows k-8. River is a 5 and i take down the 5490 pot. 

2 hands later i get 10-10 under the gun and limb in.  A short stack raises 360 leaving him with 440 and the guy i just busted moves all in with 1500. Now im pretty sure that im in way better shape than him. He has been rebuying like the allin and rebuy button has been stuck, so even i the shortstack has a better hand i will win chips. They both show a-10 so a great spot to be in, and i win the 3920 and move up to 7010.

Then a few hands later i pick up a-k in middle possition with blinds 100-50, ad raise to 300. The maniac ive busted 2 times calls and the flop comes  9-5-2. I bet 425 and he moves all in with 1350 so i call the remaining 925 and he shows a-3. Turn is a queen and the river an ace, so i win it with my q kicker and take down 9498.

We then go on break and there have been made 798 rebuys and 406 use add on. 275 players are left and average stack is 9380 so im just above average. Starting blinds are 120-60.

I limp in a few pots where i dont hit, and then loose to a small stack who moves all in with q-4 suited and i have a-q on the button. We get heads up, he hits a flush on the river and im down to 7800.

I then get moved to another table and get absolutely no playable hands and when we go to break i have 5000 left. Average stack is 17.000 and 147 players are left.

After 15min i pick up a-k in bb. Blinds are 500-250 and a player make it 1500. Everybody folds and i push. He calls and shows a-j and i win the pot.

Now a few minutes later i pick up a-q in late possition. I raise it to 1500 and button calls. Flop is a-6-3 and i bet half the pot and get a call. A 10 on the turn and i bet half the pot again and get a call. I now only have 3620 left river is a jack and i push the rest. Button happily calls and turns over 3-3 giving him chips and im out as number 127 outside the money.

I was just chilling on the couch yesterday so dident write an reviews while playing.

I played the usual $2500 freeroll at pokerstars and finished 88 out of 5495 and won $4,5.

I also played a little 0.05-0.10 fixed limit cash at absolute poker and increased my bankroll from 7.31 to 8.82.

I dident write any review from yesterday. I only played in the 1$ 2100$ added at pokerstars but was out very fast.

Apart from that i played some cash at absolute poker, but lost and my bankroll took a little dive,

Today im giving the usual nordic 2500$ freeroll a shot. Im really amazed how easy it is to start building a bankroll from nothing. If you are from europe and can play in this nordic freeroll i would say that an average player can cash minimum 2$ in atleast 1 of 5 tournaments.

As usual half the table is sitting out, so there are preflop stealing going on constantly. I dont understand why so many people register but dont play.  I do pretty good though and double up taking down small pots within the first half hour.

Then an intersting hand comes up. (hh 1) A player is moved to the table with 1375 and moves all in in early possition. Now im pretty sure that im ahead here with my 9-9. Very few players make this move with a pair thats better than my nines. It can very well be 2 high cards but there is also a good chance that its a smaller pair or even an ace with a lower kicker than a nine. I can survive the gamble so i take my chances and move. Now there are still players behind me, but most of them are sitting out. He shows 10-q and hits the 10 on the flop. He also hits a 10 on the turn, BUT a 9 on the river saves me and i take it down.

The next hand i get 4-4 in BB (hh 2) and catch a set on the flop. I raise and bet the pot all the way and we are heads up on the river where when i bet he tries to bluff me with the rest of hes stack when the river brings a 3rd heart. The pot is way to big though and i call and win it. Im now already up to 7000.

Just before the first break i take a hit though. I pick up 8-8 and raise it. (hh 3) Late possition calls it and flop comes 3-6-6. He dosent have much left so i put him all in and he makes a “tough” call with 6-6 giving him quads on the flop. Im done to 4500 in chips, but still in the game.

We go on break and i have 5170 in chips. Average is 6591 and we are 1464 players left. Blinds are now 300-150 with 25 ante.

A few hands in a situation comes up that i want to explain why not to play like this. (hh 4)
There are 2 limbers in the pot and i have k-10 in sb and call. Flop comes 2-4-6 with 2 spades. Everybody checks and the turn brings a 3 of spade. River is a king and early possition bet minimum bet of 300. The player in late possition now makes a minimum raise and shows 5-7 giving him a straight that wins the hand. This is a bad play though. He should have betted on the turn and not give anymore free cards to a flushdraw. Also by making the minimum reraise he most likely only gets a call if hes beat and often a reraise if hes up agains the flush putting him in a very bad spot.

Im getting low stack now and its time to try and doubble up.
I get 4-4 and im sitting thinking if its time to move now with 4000 left and 1000 already in the pot. I dont realise i have used my timebank, and before i know it my hand gets folded and offcourse a 4 comes on the flop.

I then get 9-j in sb and limb.(hh 5)  Flop comes a-9-2 and its checked to the turn that brings a 4. I now think i have the best hand with my 9 and push it, but middle pos had a-9 with 2 pair on flop and was sucking my in. Dammit im gone finishing as number 756.
